Clothed Spaces explores the mountain tent as a primordial micro-architecture: lightweight, temporary, and in direct dialogue with the landscape—clothing nature without altering it.

Clothed Spaces invites participants to design an innovative mountain tent conceived as a lightweight, temporary micro-architecture. The competition is conceptual and experimental, encouraging bold and visionary proposals that rethink the tent beyond its role as simple shelter. The focus is on the relationship between form, function, materials, and geometry, with particular attention to fabric as an architectural “skin” mediating between interior and exterior. Projects should explore reversibility, minimal structural impact, ease of assembly, and adaptability, envisioning a habitable space for two people, expandable up to four.

The post Schrödinger’s Room Edition #2 appeared first on designboom | architecture & design magazine.

Introduction
There is a space that escapes definition—a space suspended between possibilities, between reality and imagination. Like Schrödinger’s famous paradox, it exists in multiple states at once, changing only when observed. This competition is not about designing a conventional room, but about imagining a space that embodies uncertainty, perception, and the wonder of infinite possibilities.

Competition
Schrödinger’s Room is an international conceptual architecture competition open to anyone who believes design is about creating emotions and exploring ideas. Inspired by the principle of superposition, participants are invited to design a room—real or imaginary—conceived as a perceptual installation, where light, sound, material, and human presence shape changing experiences. The room can be any size or form. What matters is its ability to express uncertainty and multiple interpretations. We are not looking for predictable solutions, but for ideas that provoke emotions, questions, and imagination. Design not just a room, but an experience.

International Competition National Slavery Museum https://www.designboom.com/competition/international-competition-national-slavery-museum/ Mon, 16 Feb 2026 00:49:39 +0000 https://www.designboom.com/?post_type=competition&p=1177905 Amsterdam launches competition to design the National Slavery Museum honoring memory, history, and inclusive public dialogue.

The post International Competition National Slavery Museum appeared first on designboom | architecture & design magazine.

]]>
The City of Amsterdam today launched an international architectural competition for the design of the National Slavery Museum, in partnership with the National Slavery Museum Foundation.

Design teams from the Netherlands and around the world are invited to develop a vision for a museum building and park at Kop van Java-eiland, the western tip of an island in a former dockland area of central Amsterdam.

Deputy Mayor Touria Meliani (responsible for Arts and Culture) said: ‘The National Slavery Museum will be a place for meeting, reflection and connection. A museum that tells the underrepresented story of the transatlantic and Indian Ocean histories of slavery and how they continue to shape the present. We are thus working together to build a shared future and a place where everyone is welcome to learn, commemorate and come together. With an international architectural competition, we are inviting designers from all over the world to help shape this meaningful place.’

Call for design teams
The City of Amsterdam is seeking a design team comprising an architect, a landscape architect, and one or more subject-matter experts specialising in the Dutch history of slavery. At a later stage, a delivery team will be selected to develop the detailed technical design and bring the project to completion. Collaborations between established practices and emerging designers are explicitly encouraged.
The design for the building and park must do justice to the historical significance of slavery, the significance of the site itself, and the role of the museum as a public place for meeting and exchange.

Representation and multiple voices

The museum has a broad societal character. In assessing submissions, particular attention will be paid to how the design reflects diverse perspectives, representation and inclusivity.
John Leerdam, director of the National Slavery Museum Foundation, said: ‘The National Slavery Museum has long been a cherished ambition. It will be a place for commemoration, connection and healing. A place of hope. For ourselves, and for the generations who come after us. This is a story that concerns us all – throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands in both Europe and the Caribbean, and far beyond.’

Registration

Registration for the competition opens on Thursday 12 February 2026. Entries may be submitted up to and including Tuesday 7 April via: https://www.amsterdam.nl/competition-national-slaverymuseum/

This webpage also contains further information about the competition procedure. The development of the museum is co-funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

BuildFest 2026: Acts of Construction – Act One: Staging invites proposals for timber pavilions and multimedia activations to be installed on the historic grounds of the 1969 Woodstock festival.

Act One (2026) examines the overlapping meanings of “staging.” In theater, staging refers to the arrangement and presentation of a play, show, or other production; in construction, staging refers to the assembly of temporary infrastructure (scaffolding, platforms, and supports) in anticipation of building. Proposals should consider how construction can be intentionally organized to accommodate unknown future uses and/or the planned disassembly and reuse of component parts in subsequent structures.

Accepted proposals will prioritize adaptability—the capacity of art and architecture to serve as the foundation, catalyst, and literal “stage” for future activations and evolving uses.

Proposals fall into three typological scales:
Installations: New construction projects utilizing primarily timber (e.g., gateways, shade pavilions, stages).
Activations: Multimedia experiences (e.g., theater, light shows, choreography, performance).
Interventions: The adaptation or re-purposing of existing installations.

Awards: Between $1,000 and $4,000 available per project, accepting up to 12 proposals.

Deliverables:
Project statement (max 250 words)
Conceptual imagery (drawings, models, diagrams, renderings)
One “hero” image (3000 px on short edge)
Off-site construction timeline and on-site installation schedule
Draft budget (including any existing monetary or in-kind support)
Bios of the faculty team
Links to past projects/research

Submission Format: Single PDF (max 20MB) to BuildFest@bethelwoodscenter.org with the subject line “Staging”

The post AAMG Global Vertiport Design Competition Phase 1 appeared first on designboom | architecture & design magazine.

]]>
The AAMG Global Vertiport Design Competition is an international architecture and infrastructure competition initiated by the Ambitious Air Mobility Group (AAMG). The competition addresses one of the central challenges of Advanced Air Mobility: the design of future-ready vertiport infrastructure for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Participants are invited to develop modular, scalable, and operationally realistic vertiport concepts that can support early AAM operations and grow into full passenger hubs over time. The competition explicitly bridges architecture, aviation operations, engineering, and urban integration, with a strong emphasis on real-world feasibility rather than purely speculative design.

The initial geographic focus is Europe, with Spain (including Málaga and the Costa del Sol) serving as a reference region. However, submissions are expected to be transferable to other international contexts, and winning concepts may be adapted for future projects in additional regions.

Designs are evaluated by an international, interdisciplinary jury composed of experts from architecture, aviation, engineering, and the Advanced Air Mobility ecosystem. Submissions are assessed on architectural quality, scalability, operational logic, sustainability, and community compatibility (including noise, visual impact, and land use).

Selected winners receive monetary awards, global visibility through AAMG’s international network, and the opportunity to collaborate with AAMG on real vertiport development projects, potentially leading to commissioned work.

The competition is positioned not only as a design challenge, but as a gateway into the emerging global AAM infrastructure market.

Terraviva launches LISON WINERY, a new international competition that challenges architects and designers to transform the historic rural complex of Ca’ Rossa into a contemporary boutique winery!
Prizes up to 9.000 € will be awarded to the winners, selected by an international jury including Daniel Kaven (William/Kaven), Patrizia Pisaniello (Microscape), Sang Dae Lee (UNITEDLAB Associates) and Laura Buka (Oppenheim Architecture), among others.

BRIEF
Lison Winery is an architecture competition that calls for the transformation of Ca’ Rossa, a historic farm immersed in the vineyards of eastern Veneto, into a contemporary boutique winery. Set within the Lison-Pramaggiore DOC territory, the project explores the relationship between rural heritage, wine culture and contemporary architectural language.
The contest challenges participants to reinterpret an abandoned agricultural complex, giving new life to its spaces through a program that combines hospitality, tasting and experiential functions. Rather than focusing on production, the project encourages a broader vision of the winery as a place to stay and engage with the landscape, where architecture becomes a medium for storytelling and sensory discovery.

PRIZES

• 3rd Prize: 1.000€
• 5 Golden Mentions: coupon for a free membership
• 10 Honorable Mentions: coupon for a free competition
• 30 Finalists: published on Terraviva channels

GUIDELINES
Designers are invited to work freely on both interior and exterior spaces, reconfiguring layouts, circulation and open areas while respecting the architectural identity of the existing structure. Landscape design plays a central role, shaping courtyards, paths and transitional spaces that connect the building to the surrounding vineyards and enhance year-round usability.
More than a simple restoration, Lison Winery seeks proposals capable of bridging past and present, transforming Ca’ Rossa into a contemporary destination where wine, architecture and territory converge – offering a new model for experiencing the Venetian vineyards.

Terraviva launches OPENAIR SUITES, a new international architecture competition inviting participants to design an Architectural Brandbook for a system of contemporary accommodation suites immersed in Sicily’s volcanic landscape.

Prizes up to 8.000 € will be awarded to the winners, selected by an international jury panel including Giovanni Polazzi (Archea Associati), Aldo Cingolani (Bertone Design), Eugenia Pronzati (The Blue Corner) and Sergio Pitrone (:Vertumn), among others.

BRIEF

Openair Suites is an international architecture competition that challenges participants to imagine a new model of rural accommodation set within the extraordinary agricultural landscape at the foothills of Mount Etna. The goal is to design two prototype suite modules conceived as part of a coherent architectural system capable of defining a recognisable hospitality identity.

More than a simple accommodation project, Openair Suites explores how contemporary design can shape a slow, immersive and authentic way of inhabiting rural landscapes, transforming small-scale architecture into a powerful tool for experience-driven hospitality.

PRIZES

• 1st Prize: 3.000€
• 2nd Prize: 2.000€
• 3rd Prize: 1.000€
• 5 Golden Mentions: coupon for a free membership
• 10 Honorable Mentions: coupon for a free competition
• 30 Finalists: published on Terraviva channels

GUIDELINES

At the core of the proposal lies the creation of an Architectural Brandbook: a set of timeless and smart architectural guidelines that translate the Openair Suites vision into space. Each suite, cluster and outdoor space should feel unmistakably part of the OAS network, remaining recognisable across different locations and agricultural settings.

Beyond the design of the individual suites and the larger architectural concept, participants are asked to imagine how this system will come to life within the selected site: La Fucina di Vulcano. Already operating as a rural hospitality complex, this location becomes the testing ground for introducing a new cluster of suites with minimal impact on the land. Designers are invited to work on lightweight, reversible structures that elevate the experience of staying in nature while maintaining comfort, intimacy and spatial quality.
